Confused on exactly how to utilize chunks.

So first time posting here. If I made any mistake with the location of my question just let me know and I'll move it or repost it. To my question though. I have gained a decent interest in game design and have been experimenting with a number of things/techniques/skills by following along with tutorials that I've been reading. I feel I am ready to put some of them to use and make a 'game.' By that I do not mean make something I want to publish. Just something cohesive enough for me to start to get a better grasp on how multiple systems work as one in a world. In the long run I'd love to make some kind of open world type game that at the very least could serve as a unique sample of my abilities or could prove to be fun among friends. In doing so I want to experiment with loading chunks to allow for a world to build and destroy itself when within range of a player to appear seamless. Problem is despite all of my googling I have yet to find a clear answer to how chunks are defined. It seems the phrase is massively associated with minecraft and while I am using cubes to build my simple little world (currently nothing large at all, maybe 4 total chunks) I am not interested in making it procedural generated. Almost all of the tutorials are mixed in with the generation of the world as well. Maybe I am missing something when I watch or read these tutorials but I can't seem to separate the generation of the world from the defining of the chunks. Sorry for the long post but maybe someone can explain how to define chunks without basing it on a procedural world. OR if anyone has a video/written guide they feels explains it best I can always put the time into watching it and experimenting with what I learn. Thanks for the help in advance! -BeWater
